Movado was originally founded as “LAI Ditescheim & Freres SA” in 1881 by Achilles Ditesheim, a 19-year-old entrepreneur, in the village of La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. The name was changed to Movado in 1905, which means “always in motion” in the artificial, international language of Esperanto. 

But not only the name could be considered creative. The Movado brand embodied both a modern design language and technical innovations. This artistic approach to watchmaking hit its peek in 1947, when the infamous single-dot dial was created by the artist Nathan George Horwitt. A few years later in 1960, Horwitt’s original dial design became the first watch dial ever to be accepted by the Museum of Modern Art, New York, into its permanent design collection. 

Even though Movado had an ongoing collaboration with Zenith in the 70s, they were suffering severely under the Quartz crisis. For this reason the company was sold in 1983 to Gerry Grinberg and since then is known as Movado Group.
